The Electric Revolution on Two Wheels: A New Era of Riding
The Electric Revolution on Two Wheels: A New Era of Riding
Electric motorcycles are no longer a distant promise—they're here, and they're redefining what riders can expect from two-wheeled transport. From daily commuters to weekend adventurers, the latest generation of electric motorcycles combines cutting-edge battery technology, intelligent connectivity, and exhilarating performance. Here's what the new wave of electric motorcycles has to offer.
1. Battery Technology: Range Without Compromise
The biggest question on every rider's mind is range. Today's electric motorcycles are answering with confidence.
Fixed-Battery Systems for Serious Riders
For those who want a traditional "plug-in-and-go" experience, fixed-battery models deliver impressive range. The Honda WN7, a full-size electric naked bike, comes equipped with a 9.3 kWh fixed lithium-ion battery that provides an estimated 140 km of range on a single charge. That's enough for a spirited weekend ride or several days of commuting.
Even more impressive, the WN7 supports CCS2 fast charging, which can take the battery from 20% to 80% in just 30 minutes. For home charging, a full charge takes under three hours. The Honda E-VO, designed for the Chinese market, offers two battery options: a 4.1 kWh dual-battery setup with 120 km of range, and a 6.2 kWh triple-battery pack that extends range to 170 km.
Removable Battery Convenience
Not everyone has access to a garage or dedicated charging spot. That's where swappable battery systems come in. Honda's EM1 e: uses the Honda Mobile Power Pack e:, a 10.3 kg removable lithium-ion battery that can be charged at home or swapped at battery stations. A single charge provides a usable range of 41.3 km, extending to 48 km in ECON mode. The battery is designed to withstand over 2,500 charging cycles, demonstrating impressive durability.
The Honda ICON e: also features a removable battery system, with a 48V/30.6Ah lithium-ion battery that provides 81 km of range per charge under consistent-speed conditions.
LFP Battery Innovation
Honda's UC3, launched in Thailand and Vietnam, adopts a fixed lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery—Honda's first use of this technology in a two-wheeler. LFP batteries are known for their long cycle life, thermal stability, and safety. The UC3 achieves 122 km of range per charge (WMTC Mode 1) and offers three selectable riding modes: STANDARD, SPORT, and ECON.
2. Performance: Power That Surprises
Electric motors deliver instant torque, and manufacturers are leveraging this characteristic to create thrilling riding experiences.
The Honda WN7's motor produces 67 horsepower and 100 Nm of torque. For context, Honda says the power output is comparable to a 600cc internal combustion engine, while the torque rivals a 1000cc machine. That's serious grunt.
The E-VO features a peak output of 15.8 kW, with a top speed of 120 km/h. The UC3's wheel-side motor (developed and manufactured in-house by Honda) produces a maximum output of 6.0 kW.
For those keeping score, LAND Moto's District ADV delivers 345 Nm of torque from its redesigned Enduro Evolution drivetrain. This American-made dual-sport tips the scales at just 109 kg, making it one of the lightest in its class.
3. Charging Infrastructure: Growing Support
One of the most significant developments in the electric motorcycle space is the expansion of charging infrastructure.
The UC3 adopts "CHAdeMO for two-wheelers," a charging standard based on international specifications. Honda offers two charger options—1200W and 450W—with charge times ranging from 4 hours (0-100% with the 1200W unit) to 9 hours (with the 450W unit).
In Thailand and Vietnam, Honda is actively expanding charging stations at dealerships and shopping malls. The company is also increasing installations of Honda e:Swap BATTERY STATIONS in major cities like Bangkok and Hanoi.
The WN7 uses the CCS2 charger standard, the same connector used by many electric cars, which opens up access to a broader network of charging points.
4. Smart Features and Connectivity
Today's electric motorcycles are as much about brains as they are about brawn.
Displays and Connectivity
The WN7 features a 5-inch TFT display with Honda RoadSync connectivity, allowing riders to integrate their smartphones for navigation, music, and calls. The E-VO goes even further with dual 7-inch TFT displays—one dedicated to navigation, music, battery status, and tire pressure monitoring.
The ICON e: keeps things simple with a full-digital inverted LCD meter that clearly displays speed and battery level.
Riding Modes and Assistance
Most new electric motorcycles offer multiple riding modes. The UC3 provides STANDARD, SPORT, and ECON modes, plus a reverse mode for easier parking and maneuvering. The E-VO offers Eco, Normal, and Sport modes, along with regenerative braking.
The WN7 includes a selectable speed limit assist, a "walking speed mode" with reverse function, and adjustable regenerative braking deceleration.
Smart Access
The Mota Z3, a Red Dot Design Award winner, offers intelligent functions such as automatic unlocking and remote locking via a smartphone app. It also features customizable battery and motor options, as well as an innovative dual-control drive system that increases performance and extends battery life.
5. Design and Practicality
Electric motorcycles are shedding the "science experiment" look and embracing purposeful, attractive design.
The WN7 uses a frameless design, with its centrally positioned aluminum battery case serving as the main structural component. This eliminates the need for a traditional frame, resulting in a sleeker, lighter, and more flexible machine. The heavy battery pack is positioned low, creating a low center of mass that improves agility and handling.
The UC3 incorporates flowing curves from front to rear with a distinctive arched form around the tail section. It features a horizontal signature light and a dedicated EV color scheme with gold-accented components.
For storage, the ICON e: offers a 26-liter luggage box under the seat—large enough for a helmet—plus an inner rack that can hold a 500ml PET bottle and a USB Type-A socket for charging devices.
6. Lightweight and Agile Options
Not every rider wants a powerful, heavy machine. For urban commuters and younger riders, lightweight electric motorcycles offer a perfect balance of practicality and fun.
The Honda EM1 e: weighs just 95 kg including the battery and features a seat height of 740 mm, making it accessible to riders of all sizes. Its in-wheel motor provides a top speed of 45 km/h, ideal for city streets and college campuses.
The ICON e: weighs 87 kg and features a flat floor space and generous seat room for a flexible riding position.
7. Off-Road Capability
The electric revolution isn't limited to paved roads. LAND Moto's District ADV is a street-legal electric dual-sport motorcycle designed for adventure riding. Key features include:
- Fully adjustable long-travel suspension with 7.5 inches of travel up front
- 9 inches of ground clearance
- Spoked wheels with tubeless design for trail durability
- Aluminum bash guard for protection
- 5.5 kWh nominal battery
- Full-color TFT display
The District ADV is hand-built in Cleveland, Ohio, and comes with a 2-year manufacturer's warranty.
Looking Ahead
Major manufacturers are committing to electric. Honda aims to achieve carbon neutrality across all its motorcycle products by the 2040s. The company describes 2024 as the "first year of global expansion" for its electric motorcycles, with more models planned.
From the 67-horsepower WN7 to the lightweight EM1 e: and the off-road capable District ADV, there's an electric motorcycle for nearly every type of rider. The technology is mature, the infrastructure is growing, and the riding experience is genuinely compelling.
The electric revolution on two wheels isn't coming—it's already here.
